Q&A: Samsung Electronics developers on the strengths of the Galaxy Book Pro series.

Q. What is Quick Share technology?
Quick Share is a short-distance file sharing service for Galaxy devices that we developed in order to make the file sharing experience easier and more convenient.

With online classes and remote work becoming more common, users increasingly need to transfer files from their phone to their PC, or vice versa. This is why we launched Quick Share for the Galaxy Book Pro series.

Q. When and where would Quick Share be especially useful?
Quick Share makes the file sharing experience easier by eliminating the need to connect devices via the internet or physically with a cable. Instead, you can share files directly from device to device.

Usually in outdoor environments or when you are not carrying a cable, file sharing from Phone to PC is done through email or social media. But this isn’t always efficient or even possible if there is no public Wi-Fi. With Quick Share, you can directly transfer files from Phone to PC, or PC to Phone in outdoor environments even without internet with Wi-Fi Direct technology.

Q. What kind of files can you transfer with Quick Share?
There is no limit to the type of files that can be transferred via Quick Share. The easiest way to check is to look for the ‘My Files’ folder on your phone. All your visible files here can be transferred.

Q. What is the technology that makes Quick Share possible?
Let me explain how Quick Share works in general. The Bluetooth Low Energy, also known as BLE, that is built into modern phones, tablets and PCs searches for nearby devices. When a user selects one of the devices from the list of search results, a file can be sent directly to that device through Wi-Fi Direct. This means the devices are connected locally and are able to send a file without an internet connection, which is a huge advantage.

Here, Wi-Fi indicates the Wi-Fi Direct connection between devices, rather than the more frequently seen Wi-Fi connection that allows us to access the internet in public places. Any device with Quick Share will automatically switch on, so the user can choose to receive files when they receive a request from the sender.

Q. Can I block my phone from getting files from strangers?
On the main screen of Quick Share, the top menu shows two options: ‘Everyone’ and ‘Contacts only.’ If you select ‘Everyone’, your device will be seen by all users who search for nearby devices. ‘Contacts only’ operates based on your Samsung account information and is only seen by previously saved contacts. Anyone who is not saved in your contacts list will not be able to search for your device.
